How to Create a Line Chart in Tableau ?

In this post you will learn how to create a Line Chart in Tableau.

Line Chart –

To create a line chart, drag and drop Profit to Rows and Order Date to Columns.

This will create a simple line chart. Now if you look closely you can see there is a + sign ahead of Order Date field. Which means we can drill-down further from Year > quarter > month > day.

Click on the + sign. Now, Tableau will start to show profit for each quarter for every year.

Now, If you click on the + sign again ahead of the quarter, Tableau will start to show data for month also.

To drill-up click on the – sign ahead of Year , we will come back to initial state.

Now, Let’s say you want to show Profit By different Product Category. To create multiple Line chart drag and drop Category to color inside Marks card.

We can see that Profit in Furniture is very less compared to Technology and Office Supplies.

Now, Let’s remove the Category Field and right click on Year. You will see two sections related to dates. Click on Month in the first section. And click on Entire view at the top. Tableau will start to show profit for each month.

The Blue color of Month tells you that Month Field is a discrete field. Tableau is aggregating profit for each month for every year. It adding profit for January 2019, January 2020, January 2021 and January 2022 into one.

But what if you want to see the Profit serially like January 2019 then February 2019, March 2019 till December 2022. To do that you have to change the Month field to continuous Field. To convert the Month to continuous right click on Month and select Month in the Second section of date related section.

Now, you can see that the line chart has changed and also the Month Field changed to Green color from Blue. To learn the difference between Discrete and continuous click this link.
